Coverage Options and Insurance Eligibility

Will My Counselling Sessions Be Covered By Insurance?

As a Counselling Therapist (#2659) registered with the Association of Counselling Therapy of Alberta (ACTA) and a Canadian Certified Counsellor (#10005245) with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), my services may be eligible for reimbursement through various private insurance plans across Alberta and Canada. However, coverage depends on your individual policy, including your plan details and the approved providers listed by your insurer.

To avoid unexpected costs, please check your benefits booklet or contact your insurance provider directly to confirm that services offered by a Counselling Therapist or Canadian Certified Counsellor are covered under your plan.

Claims Platforms I Work With

I am set up with TELUS Health eClaims, a platform used by many insurance providers to process therapy and counselling claims.

Clients pay for their sessions directly and typically submit their claims to their insurer themselves. For eligible plans, I can also submit the receipts electronically through TELUS Health eClaims, allowing the platform to process reimbursement directly to the client. For certain plans, direct billing may be available. Coverage depends on the client’s individual insurance plan.

You can view TELUS Health’s eClaims webpage for insurer eligibility by profession here.

For insurers not part of TELUS Health eClaims, clients can submit receipts themselves for reimbursement, or Schaefer Counselling Services can submit them electronically when possible.

Other Insurance Providers That May Reimburse Counselling Services

These insurers may offer reimbursement for services provided by Counselling Therapists and Canadian Certified Counsellors, depending on your specific plan. This list is not exhaustive—additional providers might also cover counselling services based on the details of your individual policy.

  • Canada Life
  • ClaimSecure
  • Empire Life
  • First Canadian
  • Great-West Life (legacy plans)
  • Simply Benefits
  • TELUS AdjudiCare

If your plan does not cover my services, sessions would be a personal expense. Health Spending Accounts (HSA) are another option clients may use to cover counselling sessions. I am happy to work with you to create a therapy schedule that supports both your healing and your financial circumstances.

Please note: A limited number of reduced-rate sessions are available and are intended for individuals experiencing significant financial hardship. To access these sessions, a prior consultation is required before booking a reduced-rate appointment online. This allows us to connect and discuss your needs. Thank you for understanding.
