In my last post, we explored some of the most common misconceptions about therapy—like the ideas that therapy is only for people in crisis, or that seeking help means you’re weak. Today, we’ll continue with five more myths I often hear, especially around trauma, healing, and what therapy actually looks like in practice.
6 You have to relive your trauma to heal
Truth: Healing from trauma doesn’t mean re-experiencing it. Approaches like EMDR, ART, and somatic therapy are designed to process painful memories safely and gently—without retraumatization. You can work through trauma at your own pace, with support and grounding every step of the way.
7 Therapy alone is enough—medication isn’t important
Truth: For some people, therapy is most effective when paired with medication. Others may find therapy alone sufficient. Every person’s needs are different, and there’s no “one right way.” Holistic care is possible—and your path can be unique to you.
8 Therapists tell you what to do
Truth: Therapy isn’t about being told what to do—it’s about discovering what feels right for you. As your therapist, I’ll help you explore options, gain clarity, and make decisions that align with your values. The process is always collaborative and grounded in choice.
9 Once you start therapy, you’ll be in it forever
Truth: The length of therapy depends entirely on your goals and needs. Some people come for a few sessions to focus on a specific issue; others stay longer to deepen self-understanding or maintain growth. Therapy is flexible and tailored to you.
Therapy is only talking—no real action
Truth: At Schaefer Counselling Services, therapy is grounded in evidence-based modalities that include exercises, skill-building, and strategies you can apply in daily life. It’s about both understanding yourself and taking actionable steps toward meaningful change.
