Think Therapy Isn’t for You? Let’s Bust Some Myths!
Many people hesitate to start therapy because of what they’ve heard—or what they think therapy is. The truth is, therapy isn’t just for crisis moments or “certain kinds” of people. It’s for anyone who wants to better understand themselves, improve relationships, and move through life with greater ease and confidence.
Let’s look at a few of the most common myths I hear about therapy—and what’s really true.
1 Therapy is only for people with severe mental health challenges
Truth: Therapy isn’t just for crisis or diagnosis. It’s helpful for anyone navigating stress, life transitions, or personal growth. You don’t have to “have it all fall apart” before reaching out for support. Everyone deserves space to feel seen, heard, and understood.
2 Therapists just listen
Truth: While listening is an important part of what I do, therapy is much more active than most people realize. Together, we explore patterns, build coping tools, and develop strategies that support real, lasting change.
3 Therapy is a quick fix
Truth: Healing takes time. Therapy isn’t a magic solution—it’s a journey of awareness, growth, and practice. Progress often comes in small, meaningful steps, and each one is worth it.
4 Seeking therapy means you’re weak
Truth: Asking for help takes strength. Choosing therapy is an act of courage and self-care—it’s a decision to face challenges head-on, rather than carry them alone.
5 My therapist will judge me
Truth: Therapy is a confidential, non-judgmental space where your experiences are respected. My role is to understand, not to judge—to hold space for whatever you bring, with compassion and care.
Curious about the rest? In my next blog, I’ll tackle myths 6–10—including a few surprises about trauma, action, and how long therapy really takes. Stay tuned!
