Dramatic sunset over Big Lake. Caption: you are not your inner critic.

Even before the holiday season arrives, November can feel surprisingly heavy. Shorter days, colder weather, and the anticipation of upcoming obligations can stir pressure, stress, and self-critical thoughts. You might notice your inner voice saying, “I’m behind,” “I should be doing more,” or “I’m not enough.”

These thoughts are common—and natural—but they don’t define you. How we respond to them matters.

Pause and notice. When self-criticism rises, take a moment to acknowledge it. Name it without judgment.

Respond with curiosity. Ask yourself: “What am I feeling right now?” or “What does my mind or body need?” Even small moments of self-kindness—a slow breath, a stretch, a brief walk outside—can create meaningful shifts.

Set gentle boundaries. If obligations are piling up, consider where you can say “no” or delegate. Boundaries are not selfish—they are acts of courage that protect your energy and well-being.

Practice reflection. Journaling, mindful breathing, or simply naming your feelings can help you move through this season with greater clarity and compassion.

Remember: you don’t have to wait for December or the holidays to be “perfect” or “productive.” Your presence, your effort, and your well-being matter right now. Small acts of care today make a big difference for tomorrow.

If self-criticism or seasonal stress feels overwhelming, professional support can help you navigate these challenges with guidance and reflection.
